Making a Way
As I sat on the couch watching the news this weekend with my daughter, a junior in high school, I recalled sitting on my parent's couch as a high school junior watching the Rodney King riots while my mom talked about watching the Watts riots unfold when she was a junior in high school. Three generations watching the same sorrow play out before their eyes. I am praying that my girls will not live out the same scene with their own children, though I am more aware than ever that I must do my part for the future to be different.
This is a moment in time when I feel compelled to make a way. Even though I am uncertain about the next steps, I hear in my heart the words of God recorded in Isaiah 43:19 and I am looking for his footsteps to follow: See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
I hope you are also feeling moved to action, even if you don't know where to start. All of scripture points us toward God's heart--his love for all people and his advocacy for the marginalized. I have also researched a list of books and other resources to help me learn and grow, so for today's blog I am simply sharing my list with you.
